Åren har gått sedan vi senast såg Maggie och Negan. De forna fienderna måste motvilligt göra gemensam sak för att utföra ett farligt uppdrag. Maggie och Negan beger sig till ett postapokalyptiskt Manhattan som sedan länge är avskuret från fastlandet. Den förfallna staden är full av de döda och invånare som har gjort New York till sin egen värld full av anarki, fara, skönhet och fasa. Allteftersom de båda tränger djupare in i den hemsökta staden blir det uppenbart att såren från deras stormiga förflutna är ett lika stort hot som farorna de står inför i nuet.
